The Great House on Necker Island in Flames During Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene has caused a major fire on Necker Island, destroying the Great House, home to Sir Richard Branson and family. The very unfortunate event took place last night on the private island, beginning around 4am on August 21st, 2011. The cause is believed to be lightning at this time. Thankfully, and most importantly, no one was hurt in the incident.

Kate Winslet, the star of the movie Titanic was in the Great House, along with her boyfriend, Louis Dowler, and her children Mia, 10, and Joe, 7. Bransons son, Sam , 25, helped guests evacuate, and the house was “completely destroyed” by the fire.

Official Statement: “Virgin Limited Edition can confirm that in the early hours of this morning, a fire took place on Necker Island causing substantial damage to the Great House. Whilst the cause at this stage is unknown it is thought most likely due to a lightening strike. Whilst substantial damage was caused to the building no guests or members of the Necker Island staff were hurt. Sir Richard Branson, members of his family and guests were on island at the time. They are all safe and currently being accommodated elsewhere on the island.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Branson family and we know they will rebuild and recover. We wish them well during this tragic event.
