It was quite evident at a very early age that Jalena was in love with music. It wasn’t, however, until the spring of 1996 while attending a concert on the island of St. Thomas, that she realized singing was the only thing she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Since that day, Jalena’s dreams of becoming a singer have become a reality. She says, “I have come so far! I wasn’t privileged enough to have been raised in a musical family or sing in a choir, so everything I know about music and singing, I’ve taught myself.” Born and raised in the British Virgin Islands to German parents, Jalena was exposed to various genres of music. Being influenced by the likes of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Shirley Bassy, Etta James and Diana King, she has unconsciously been molded by some of the best the music business has to offer.
Jalena made the decision to progress from singing alone in her room, to singing in front of an audience in January of 2004. Though happy to be doing what she loved to do, it took years to overcome her immense stage fright. In 2005 she moved to Antigua to sing with the now defunct band, “Da Bhann.” This affair proved to be one of the biggest and most challenging learning experiences in Jalena’s career. The once shy island native was forced to perform on a professional level while touring the United States England, Canada, and the Caribbean. After leaving Da Bhann, Jalena moved back to the Virgin Islands to hone her singing skills with several other local bands on the island of Tortola.
Having already begun the process of recording her own songs, she achieved local success in 2005 with her song, “Text me,” penned by Martino Mark. This was soon followed by her self-written, “Wutless,” which went on to become one of the most popular songs of the carnival season. Since then, she has not looked back. Jalena spends most of her time writing and recording as she continues to build her repertoire of hits!
With determination and her growing experience, this budding songstress is a professional when it comes to entertaining her audience. Jalena’s mesmerizing stage performance and sexy dance moves (that will make a grown man cry), she is well on her way to becoming one of the Caribbean’s leading ladies!
